A Story About a Book About Love Letters

In The Star Phoenix newspaper (in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) earlier this week, reporter Stephanie McKay writes about a new book, "Where the Nights are Twice as Long: Love Letters of Canadian Poets." In her story, McKay writes, "The love letter is not dead, just different, a new book proves."

"Where the Nights are Twice as Long," published by Goose Lane Editions and edited by David Eso and Jeanette Lyne, the book includes letters from as far back as 1883 and as recent as 2014.

The book also has an accompanying blog

Elegant New Rose Stamp

Have you seen the new Vintage Rose stamp that is set to be released on Valentine's Day?

It's a Forever stamp and is part of the U.S. Postal Service's Wedding Series. The stamp art features an elaborate black and white line drawing of a rose. In the top left corner is a dark red heart, adding a dash of color to the stamp. The Vintage Rose complements the Vintage Tulip stamp, also to be released on Feb. 14. Both stamps can be pre-ordered online now.

The Vintage Tulip is a 70-cent stamp, for envelopes that weigh two ounces; they are perfect for heavy invitations for weddings and other celebrations, greeting cards for all occasions, and mailings such as small gifts that require extra postage.

According to the USPS, the drawings are details from engraved plates originally created by naturalist artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). These stamps were printed using the intaglio printing technique. Jeanne Greco designed both stamps, and Greg Breeding was the art director.

Both stamps come with a variety of products for the collector as well as the letter writer. You can order the stamps in panes of 20 or blocks of 10 or 4. Also available are first day covers, framed enlargements of the stamps and notecards that feature both designs.

Visit the US Postal Service website (usps.com) for more details.

Handwritten Valentines

In the Huddersfield (England) Daily Examiner today, author Denis Kilcommons writes about "The art of handwriting love letters."

His article has lots of great statistics about how many people still write love letters, and he admits that he doesn't write things by hand as often as he used to. But, he goes on to explain why we all should write — by hand — more often:
"A pen and paper makes you consider in more detail the sentiments you want to express: if you get it wrong, you have to start again. That’s why people treasure letters more than an email or text because of the trouble entailed."

Love's Messenger, 1885, Marie Spartali Stillman
Today, the Mic media website features an article on the handwritten love letter by Jared Keller, director of news at Mic.

"The handwritten love letter, the literary aphrodisiac of the last two centuries, is one of the most personal, powerful expressions of romance whose qualities cannot be truly replicated in the digital world," Keller writes.

According to the LLP, the community project has  partnered with 18 Vancouver artists to create a book with inspiring letters and visual representations of them. This book is being launched in a week-long art show, in which the letters and their art will be displayed at Vancouver's Omega Gallery. The opening event on Feb. 6, will give attendees a chance to mingle with artists and fellow letter writers.

The art exhibit will be on display until Feb. 14, when it will close with a special Love Letter Writing Party.

According to the LLP website, the project was started in 2013 by Fiona McGlynn received this piece of advice: If you want to be passionate in life, consider the greatest challenge you've faced and help the next person overcome it. That started Fiona on a path to helping children and families who had gone through divorce. Eventually, the Love Letter Project was launched, encouraging everyone to write a love letter to help a stranger overcome a challenge that you have also faced. Letter writers may submit their letters online for inclusion on the website.

The Love Letter Project was created in 2013, when the founder, Fiona McGlynn, received a gem of advice: “If you want to be passionate in life, consider the greatest challenge you’ve faced, and help the next person to overcome it.” Fiona decided to draw on her experience with her parent’s divorce and write a children’s book (“i and the Great Divide”) designed to help kids in divorce feel loved and self-expressed. She was so inspired and moved by the experience of connecting with families in divorce that she decided to encourage other people to follow the same piece of advice. - See more at: http://www.theloveletterproject.ca/about/#sthash.z4TZiUl8.dpuf

How to Write a Love Letter

Valentine's Day is less that two weeks away, and many of us are either thinking about love letters or probably should be. Of course, not everyone is in the market for love letter advice, but if you are, here are a few tips:

♥ Write from your heart. Write from your true self. Don't try to be someone you're not; just pour your true feelings into the love letter. Express how you feel. This means, don't copy someone else's letter and sign your name to it.

♥ But that doesn't mean you can't use others' words for inspiration or even as support. For example, you might include a favorite quote, love poem or even the words to a song...just be sure to give proper credit to the source. Look at the list below for some ideas where you might find such information.

♥ Do your best. "It's the thought that counts" means you need to put some thought into the process. Try to find some nice paper to write on. Think about what you want to say. Use your best handwriting. That said, your best effort doesn't have to be perfect. Your true love will likely be happy with an "I love you" hand-written on his or her breakfast napkin.

♥ If you're writing a "love letter," make it a love letter...don't just tack on an "I love you" to a regular ol' everyday letter. Make sure your recipient knows this is a special letter. Avoid the mundae.

♥ Write in a positive tone, sharing your love and your reasons for writing. But, refrain from apologizing for not having written sooner or including self-deprecating comments. Write an uplifting letter that conveys the warmth you feel for your beloved.

♥ Include a little something special. Maybe a Valentine's Day card or a picture you've drawn. It doesn't have to be anything expensive or even store-bought, but it can be. A bookmark, a hair ribbon, a recipe clipped from a magazine, a picture of a place where the two of you dream of going. Be creative.

♥ If you have time, send the letter to one of the post offices that has special Valentine's Day postmarks, such as the Loveland, Colorado, postmark above. For more information on that particular postmark, click here. There are others. Although at the time of this blog post, the USPS Newsroom didn't have a 2015 story about Valentine's postmarks, here are links to the 2014 postmark list and the 2013 list. According to the Romeo Observer, the joint According to the Romeo Observer, the joint postmark project with Romeo, Michigan, and Juliette, Georgia, will continue this year. The 2009 version is pictured at right.

And, finally, here are a few links to some sites that might have some inspirational quotes, poems, etc. for your love letter writing endeavor:

Old letters help woman recover some memories

CBS's Steve Hartman reported on a story this past week about a woman whose failing memory was jogged by some old letters. If you've ever seen Hartman's "On the Road"segments on the CBS Evening News, then you might know there's a little more to the story than old letters sparking old memories.

It seems that the letters were somehow donated to the Goodwill, and a keen-eyed observer there realized that the letters were something that shouldn't just be tossed aside or even sold. She tracked down the original recipient of the letters, who was more than happy to get them back.

You can read the story by clicking here or watch the video below. The segment was also aired on the Sunday Morning Show this past weekend.
